What to do if there are worms in your dog's eyes
Symptoms
If your dog has worms in its eyes, it means that there is a parasitic infection in its body and the worms have migrated upwards. This requires timely treatment. The main symptoms include eye inflammation, redness, swelling, and lacrimation. If you can see the worms, it means the infection is quite severe.
Treatment
First, rinse your dog's eyes with physiological saline. If the worms cannot be completely cleaned, follow your doctor's guidance to use an injection containing levamisole hydrochloride to treat the eyes.
After the worms die, gently massage the eyes for 1-2 minutes and then clean the worms from the inner eyelid with sterilized wet gauze or cotton balls. Finally, use chloramphenicol eye drops to control eye inflammation.
After removing the worms, give your dog an emergency deworming treatment. Generally, use deworming drugs containing abamectin, avermectin, etc. Note that collie breeds should not be treated with drugs containing avermectin, while those containing selamectin are safer and are recommended.
If you cannot handle the worms in your dog's eyes, take it to the hospital promptly. In clinical practice, visible worms or larvae are usually removed under local anesthesia with sterile forceps, and then antibiotic drops are applied.
Eye worms are zoonotic diseases, so wash your hands immediately after touching an infected dog to avoid infection.
