What to do if my dog doesn't eat and is lethargic

There are many reasons for a dog's lack of appetite and lethargy, and it is necessary to combine specific clinical manifestations and feeding habits to judge the cause. Dogs have strong endurance, and they usually become lethargic when they are sick. If your dog usually has a good appetite, it is more likely to be caused by a disease. You can give your dog a small amount of glucose water to replenish energy. If the situation does not improve, it is advisable to go to the pet hospital for a check-up to determine the cause and treat it accordingly.

  1. Dogs have strong endurance. If your dog shows lethargy, it means that the illness is already severe. Infections caused by parasites, bacteria, and viruses can all lead to loss of appetite and lethargy. Owners should take their dogs to the vet in a timely manner to avoid delays in treatment.

  2. If the cause of the disease is detected as a parasite infection, give your dog deworming medicine containing ingredients such as Albendazole, Pyrimethamine, or Levamisole to treat internal parasites. If it is a bacterial infection, use antibacterial drugs such as sulfonamides. If it is a viral infection, appropriate inhibitory proteins, interferons, and antibiotics are needed for treatment. Note that all of these drugs should be used under the guidance of a veterinarian.

  3. Additionally, dogs may also experience loss of appetite after surgery or childbirth, which is generally a normal phenomenon. Pain and discomfort can affect a dog's appetite and mental state. Prepare enough drinking water for your dog and constantly observe their condition.
