What to do if your dog has low blood sugar
Firstly, understand the cause of low blood sugar in your dog. Is it caused by simple hunger or secondary to other diseases? If the low blood sugar is secondary to other diseases, treatment of the primary disease is necessary.
For symptoms of low blood sugar alone, the most rapid and effective method is to inject a certain concentration and dosage of glucose solution intravenously.
When the symptoms are mild, you can also feed your dog some glucose solution or foods at home. Be careful not to feed too fast or choke the dog. If the symptoms do not improve, take your dog to the pet hospital for further examination as soon as possible.
If your dog has low blood sugar, the most important thing is to replenish your dog's blood sugar as soon as possible. The specific handling methods are as follows:
If your dog has low blood sugar caused by not eating, slowly give your dog some 50% glucose solution to drink. This should help alleviate the symptoms in a short period of time.
If your dog has low blood sugar caused by picky eating and insufficient energy intake, try feeding your dog some favorite foods.
If your dog has low blood sugar due to vomiting or diarrhea, first give your dog some glucose to alleviate the symptoms, and then take your dog to the pet hospital to determine the specific cause. Once the cause is identified, proceed with targeted treatment.
If a young dog born only a few days ago develops low blood sugar, it is usually due to the immature body system of the puppy. Puppies have fast metabolism, and since milk is easily digestible, they can easily run out of energy supply for a period of time. The body can only consume its own energy reserves to supply the puppy's body, making them prone to low blood sugar.
In this case, feed the puppy in small meals throughout the day. In emergencies, you can also give them some glucose water, but it is better to let the puppy eat.
Note: Always confirm that your dog has low blood sugar before giving them sugar-containing drugs, otherwise it may have the opposite effect.
