What to do if your dog is a picky eater

Dog pickiness is often a result of spoiling, except for diseases. Never give your dog food from the table. Once you do, it will learn that it can get better tasting food here than in its bowl.

Causes of dog pickiness:

  • Dog pickiness is usually caused by spoiling.

What to watch out for when your dog is picky:

1. Never give food to a dog standing by the table. Once you do, it will know that it can get better tasting food here than in its bowl.

2. Don't give it any of the food you're eating. Make it understand that its food can only come from its bowl, not your hand. What you can eat doesn't mean it can eat it too.

3. Give treats with a reason, such as rewards during training. Give a small amount each time, just enough for it to taste. Don't give it a handful of treats just because it's cute.

How to improve your dog's picky eating:

It's never too late to change. Make it known that there are no other options except dog food, and even then, it's wet food.

  1. Feed your dog at fixed times daily. If it doesn't eat within 30 minutes, take the food away and wait for the next meal. Repeat this process until it learns to eat on time.

  2. The whole family must follow the rules. Signing an agreement wouldn't be too much. If someone doesn't follow the rules, all your efforts will be wasted.

  3. Pickiness doesn't exist for dogs with principled owners.
