What to Pay Attention to After a Spay Operation for Female Dogs
After a spay operation, dog owners should pay attention to three aspects: diet, medication, and wound care. In terms of diet, feed the dog easy-to-digest liquid foods such as cans, nutritional supplements, etc. Once the dog resumes eating, choose high-protein foods along with vegetables and fruits to supplement its nutrition and promote wound recovery. During the recovery period, ensure that the dog wears an Elizabethan collar to prevent it from licking the wound and administer antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs on time. Also, closely monitor the dog to avoid intense exercise and do not rush to bathe it. Keep the wound dry for faster recovery.
- Diet
After the spay operation, if the dog's appetite is poor, you can feed it some liquid and easy-to-digest foods, such as cans, wet food, and nutritional supplements. Once the dog recovers from the operation and resumes eating, you can feed it more high-protein foods such as chicken, boneless fish, and beef to promote wound recovery. At the same time, properly match vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins and fibres, such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and apples. Ensure that the dog's diet is balanced and supplement its energy to recover sooner.
- Medication
As female dog spays involve removing the uterus and ovaries, the resulting wound is larger and the dog's pain response is more severe. Especially 1-2 hours after the operation, as the anesthesia wears off, the wound will be more painful. At this time, the dog might lose control due to pain, showing anxiety, aggression, constant barking, licking the wound, or even attacking people. Therefore, after the operation, the owner must put an Elizabethan collar on the dog.
During the wound recovery period, administer antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs to the dog daily to prevent wound inflammation and secondary infection, which could lead to more serious diseases. After consulting the doctor, you can also apply wound healing creams to the dog's wound.
- Wound Care
The wound after a female dog's spay is larger and requires a longer recovery time. During this period, the owner should avoid intense exercise such as running and jumping and prevent the wound from getting wet. Keep the wound dry and do not rush to bathe the dog.
