Why do cats like boxes?

Cats like boxes mainly due to genetic reasons, the sense of security boxes provide, curiosity, warmth, nail grinding, and mood relief. Based on these reasons, owners can buy some box toys for cats to play with or prepare some paper boxes. However, when preparing paper boxes for cats, it's necessary to remove any sharp parts such as staples to prevent accidental injuries. Also, tape or other sticky substances on the box should be removed, as they may cause intestinal blockage.

  1. Genetic reasons

Cats' ancestors lived in the wild, sleeping in tree holes or rock holes. Because cats have flexible bodies, they can easily fit into these narrow spaces, avoiding fierce wild animals and gaining a sense of security. Although modern cats are domesticated, this genetic trait has been preserved.

  1. Boxes provide a sense of security

Cats are animals with a strong sense of insecurity, and the enclosed space of a box offers high concealability, giving cats a sense of security and a good hiding place.

  1. Curiosity

Cats are highly curious and are eager to explore anything they haven't encountered before. Thus, they like to crawl into boxes to see what's inside.

  1. Boxes are warmer

Paper boxes are excellent insulating materials. The small space allows cats to curl up, further helping them stay warm. For cats, boxes are also a comfortable place to sleep.

  1. Nail grinding

Both in terms of material and hardness, paper boxes are suitable for cats to grind their claws. Therefore, paper boxes are also a great place for cats to sharpen their claws.

  1. Mood relief

When cats are feeling unhappy, crawling into a box provides special comfort, helping to alleviate their misery and make their mood better.
