Why do cats like to rummage through trash cans?

Cats liking to rummage through trash cans may be caused by curiosity, attracted by the smell inside the trash can, not being fully fed, or rebellion. However, if after rummaging through the trash can, the cat still likes to eat unusual things like tissues and grass inside the trash can, it may be due to pica. In this case, it's best to take the cat to the pet hospital as soon as possible to check if it's pica-induced. If so, timely supplementation of trace elements is needed.

  1. Curiosity

Cats have a strong curiosity and are full of doubts about everything. So when the owner is not around, they will rummage through the trash can to see what's inside. As curiosity is a natural trait of cats and hard to change, it's recommended to throw away trash promptly or switch to covered trash cans.

  1. Attracted by the smell inside the trash can

Cats have very sensitive olfactory senses. When there are bones, leftovers, and other food in the trash can, they are attracted to the smell and rummage through the trash can. After throwing food into the trash can, it's best to dispose of the garbage promptly.

  1. Not being fully fed

If your cat suddenly starts rummaging through the trash can without any prior habits, it's likely because they aren't fully fed. So when they smell the tempting trash can, they want to rummage through it. In this case, the owner can appropriately increase the feeding amount and occasionally offer some of the cat's favorite snacks.

  1. Rebellious psychology

Cats also have a strong rebellious nature. Sometimes, the more you scold and beat them, telling them not to rummage through the trash can, the more they will exacerbate the behavior. Therefore, using violent methods to solve problems is useless.

  1. Suffering from pica

If a cat has pica, they will also rummage through trash cans, but the things they eat are quite strange, such as eating grass and tissues. If you find your cat eating unusual things from the trash can, be alert, as it may be due to pica. In this case, timely supplementation of trace elements is necessary. If the situation is severe, consult a veterinarian promptly!
