Why do dogs always sniff their noses?

Dogs constantly sniffing their noses may be due to genetic reasons, as some dog breeds have shorter respiratory tracts. Therefore, just a bit of extra exercise can lead to difficulty breathing, causing them to constantly sniff their noses. This is a normal phenomenon. Secondly, it could be that the dog's nasal cavity is stimulated by substances such as perfume, floral scent, or dust. As long as the owner removes the stimuli in a timely manner, it will resolve itself. Additionally, when a dog has a respiratory tract infection, they will also sniff their noses, along with symptoms such as sneezing, running nose, and coughing. In this case, it's best to take the dog to the pet hospital as soon as possible for examination and treatment.

  1. Breed issue

Some dog breeds are born with shorter respiratory tracts, such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs. These dogs will experience difficulty breathing and constantly sniff their noses after a bit of exercise. This is a normal phenomenon. Owners should control these dogs' exercise levels and minimize environmental stressors.

  1. Nasal cavity stimulation

If a dog's mental and physical condition is normal, and they don't show symptoms of coughing, runny nose, or fever, but occasionally exhibit sniffing breath like they can't catch their breath, it may be due to stimulating gases or particles in the air or environment, even cold air entering the dog's nasal cavity during breathing. This can cause a reverse sneeze due to nasal irritation, such as perfume, floral scent, or dust. Unless a large foreign object enters the nasal cavity, this generally won't pose a threat to the dog's health, and the owner simply needs to remove the stimuli in a timely manner.

  1. Respiratory tract infection

When a dog's respiratory tract is infected, excessive mucus and phlegm secretion can block the respiratory system, causing difficulty breathing and constant sniffing. This is accompanied by symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and coughing. If this situation is noticed, it's recommended to take the dog to the pet hospital for inspection and treat according to the examination results.
