What's going on when a dog keeps digging its bed?
A dog keeping digging its bed may be due to the following reasons:
- Clawing
If a dog's nails haven't been trimmed for a long time, they may feel uncomfortable and resort to digging, scratching walls or furniture to grind down their nails. To solve this, trim your dog's nails but be careful not to cut into the bloodline or pad, avoiding excessive struggle due to pain.
- Making a sleeping spot
If the dog digs its bed before sleeping, it's most likely a natural habit. Dogs like to make their beds clean before settling down for a comfortable sleep. There's no need to worry too much, as the dog will naturally sleep after making its bed.
- Hiding food
Dogs have a tendency to store food, so they may dig their beds to hide leftovers. If you notice your dog suddenly starts digging its bed while eating tasty food, it's probably trying to hide some away. There's no need to worry, just stop and correct the behavior when you see it happening.
- Other smells in the bed
Dogs are very sensitive to smells. If a dog's digging behavior is persistent and frequent, it could be due to a distinct scent in or around the bed. For instance, the smells of laundry detergent, scented beads, or disinfectant may bother some dogs, prompting them to dig to remove the odor. When cleaning your dog's bed, use mild laundry detergent and simply wash away dirt without adding any fragrance.
- Near labor
If a pregnant female dog exhibits digging behavior, it might indicate that labor is approaching. This is a normal occurrence, just keep an eye on the dog's labor progress.
