Can cats expel stillborn fetuses themselves?
Whether a cat can expel a stillborn fetus depends on its physical condition and the condition of the fetus in its abdomen. Generally, when the cat can have normal contractions and the fetus has a small size, the cat can expel the stillborn fetus itself. However, if the cat has stopped contracting or the fetus has a large size or an abnormal position, the cat cannot expel the stillborn fetus on its own. In this case, it is necessary to take the cat to the hospital for induction or cesarean section immediately to avoid severe infections caused by the retention of the stillborn fetus in the cat's abdomen for a long time, which may even threaten the cat's life.
Firstly, the expulsion of a stillborn fetus from a cat's body is necessary and must be timely. If the fetus or placenta cannot be expelled for a long time, it can lead to inflammation of the cat's uterus and reproductive tract, causing diseases such as uterine pyometra.
Whether a cat can expel a stillborn fetus itself depends on the situation. If the cat's cervix remains open after the fetus dies, the mother can secrete oxytocin, and the dead fetus in the abdomen is small and in a normal position, the cat will expel the stillborn fetus itself.
However, if the cat has any of the following conditions: cervical closure, no longer secreting oxytocin, a large dead fetus in the abdomen, or an abnormal position, the cat cannot expel the stillborn fetus itself. Especially when the dead fetus has already developed well and has a large size, the cat's strength is weak, and dystocia is likely to occur during childbirth. In this case, the cat needs to go to the hospital for assisted delivery or cesarean section.
