Can vaccines and deworming be done together?

Vaccines and deworming for dogs are generally recommended to be done separately to avoid exacerbating the dog's stress response and resulting in vaccine immunization failure. Getting a vaccine is a stressful experience for a dog, and some dogs may experience vaccine reactions such as vomiting, diarrhea, and allergies. After being vaccinated, the dog may also experience decreased mental and appetite stimulation, soft stools, etc. If deworming medication is then administered to the dog, it may easily increase the dog's gastrointestinal stimulation. Therefore, it is usually not recommended to do both at the same time.

Firstly, it is recommended to interval vaccines and deworming by one week, and not to vaccinate and deworm simultaneously. This is because some dogs may experience temporary gastrointestinal discomfort and decreased mental and appetite stimulation after getting vaccinated. If deworming is also performed simultaneously, it may further increase the dog's gastrointestinal burden, and even lead to vomiting and diarrhea, easily increasing the risk of the dog getting sick.

Secondly, the precondition for a dog to get vaccinated is to be in good health, and vaccination should only be performed when there are no adverse reactions such as vomiting and diarrhea. However, deworming drugs usually have certain toxic and side effects, which may cause stress reactions in dogs, such as vomiting, decreased mental and appetite stimulation, and diarrhea. If vaccination is given to the dog at this time, it may reduce the immune response of the vaccine and fail to achieve the preventive effect.

Lastly, dogs can be taken to the pet hospital for vaccination starting from 45 days old. It is not recommended to take dogs outdoors or give them baths before the vaccination cycle is completed, to avoid infection by viruses due to a weakened immune system. Meanwhile, timely deworming is also necessary. Usually, dogs under 6 months old need to be dewormed internally once a month, while dogs over 6 months old need to be dewormed internally every three months. External deworming should be performed monthly.
