Dog has diarrhea but is in good spirits
When a dog has diarrhea but is in good spirits, it may be due to accidentally swallowing foreign objects that cause stomach and intestinal injuries. The owner is advised to take the dog to a pet hospital for X-rays to identify and remove the foreign object. Secondly, it could be caused by parasites such as hookworms and trichomonads, which require timely deworming. Additionally, consider whether the cause is viral, such as parvovirus, distemper, or coronavirus, which can all cause digestive tract diseases in dogs. In the early stages of a viral infection, the dog's spirit may remain good because the virus has not yet fully erupted.
- Swallowing foreign objects
If a dog accidentally eats sharp objects like chicken or duck bones, fish hooks, needles, or plastic, it can cause bleeding after damaging the intestines. This may also be accompanied by vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, and whining. In this case, the owner is advised to take the dog to a pet hospital for X-rays to determine the location, shape, and size of the foreign object. If necessary, the object can be removed surgically.
- Infection with parasites
If the owner has not given the dog regular deworming treatments, the dog may become infected with parasites such as coccidia or trichomonads. The mechanical movement of a large number of parasites in the intestines can damage the intestinal mucosa, causing bleeding and even soft stools or mucus. The owner should observe the dog and take it to a pet hospital for a fecal examination if mucus is present to determine if there are parasites. Then, select an appropriate deworming medication.
- Infection with contagious diseases
If a puppy has not yet completed its vaccinations or has completed them but not screened for antibodies, owners should be alert to contagious diseases such as parvovirus, distemper, and coronavirus. In the early stages of these diseases, the dog may not show obvious signs of lethargy, but if its spirit suddenly deteriorates, it could indicate a more severe illness. Therefore, it is recommended that owners take their dogs to a pet hospital for screening to detect contagious diseases early on, enabling early treatment.
