Dog seems particularly down after vaccination

The vaccine is composed of inactivated or weakened viruses, so dogs may experience poor mental status after vaccination, which is a normal situation and owners do not need to worry too much. As long as the dog does not show allergic reactions such as vomiting, convulsions, and swelling, their mental status should return to normal within 1 day after vaccination.

Here are some points to note before, during, and after vaccination:

1. Before vaccination

First, owners should give their dogs deworming treatment both internally and externally two weeks before vaccination. Second, owners should observe their dog's mental status and take the dog to the pet hospital for infectious disease screening and temperature measurement when the dog is in good mental status. Also, dogs should not be given a bath two weeks before vaccination to prevent them from catching a cold and compromising the immune response.

2. During vaccination

First, owners should pay attention to keeping their dogs warm to prevent them from catching a cold and affecting the antibody production. Second, if the dog is receiving its first vaccination, the immune procedure consists of three doses, and during this period, the dog's antibody levels are low and not yet stable. Therefore, it is not recommended for owners to take their dogs outside or let them interact with other dogs until the immune procedure is completed. Also, dogs should be provided with high-nutrition food during vaccination to enhance their immune ability.

3. After vaccination

First, do not leave the vaccination site immediately. It is recommended for owners to observe their dogs for 15 to 20 minutes in the hospital, and only leave when there are no abnormalities. Second, some dogs may experience loss of appetite after vaccination, which usually returns to normal within a day. Owners can feed their dogs nutritional supplements during this time. Also, 7 to 15 days after vaccination, it is recommended to take the dog to the pet hospital for antibody testing. Once the antibodies are qualified, owners can take their dogs outside for play.
