How to correct dog bite behavior

There are several methods to correct dog bite behavior:

  1. Desensitization and adaptation method: This is mainly for dogs with a strong temperament and aggressive nature. It involves socialization training and desensitization.

  2. Training with command method: This is a simple method for dogs that like to bite or are aggressive.

  3. Interest replacement method: This is for dogs that deliberately bite their owners due to lack of toys or boredom. Use some interesting and durable chew toys to divert the dog's attention.

  4. Cold treatment method: This method is suitable for dogs that like to fake bite their owners. It involves using a cold treatment approach to make the dog understand its mistake.

  5. Desensitization and adaptation method:

Dogs have strong territorial awareness and alertness, and even tiny sounds can attract their attention, especially those with a volatile temperament and strong aggression. To deal with this type of dog bite behavior, the owner needs to slowly cultivate the dog's affection and loyalty towards them, then conduct socialization training and desensitization.

Specifically:

  1. Frequently take the dog to complex human environments to let them observe humans up close.

  2. Find several friends the dog has never met before and let them slowly interact with the dog. The owner should comfort the dog and prevent it from biting people, allowing the dog to slowly adapt to and get used to the approach of strangers, reducing hostility and aggression towards them.

  3. Training with command method:

For dogs that like to bite or are aggressive, the owner can first train the dog with commands, focusing on strengthening the dog's obedience to the owner's commands. When the dog shows biting or aggressive behavior, the owner should immediately issue a stop command such as "stop," "sit," or "don't move." Intelligent and obedient dogs will stop biting upon receiving the command.

This method is simple and can be practiced during daily play. Combine snack rewards with command training to teach the dog simple commands and condition it to respond to these commands.

  1. Interest replacement method:

Many dogs also deliberately fake bite their owners due to a lack of toys or boredom, and they consider this behavior reasonable. In this case, the owner can loudly scold the dog and punish it promptly to make it understand that this behavior is wrong.

In addition to scolding and punishment, the owner can also prepare some interesting and durable chew toys for the dog to divert its attention. Or, choose special chew snacks as rewards instead of ordinary snacks, satisfying the dog's chewing needs and helping it redirect its biting behavior.

  1. Cold treatment method:

This method is suitable for dogs that like to fake bite their owners. When the dog bites or plays bite, the owner should show disapproval towards this behavior in their attitude, such as being cold or scolding the dog, so that it understands that the owner doesn't like this behavior.

If the owner wants to punish the dog, be strict and speak harshly. Don't pay attention to the dog when it bites, making it understand that it will only be attended to after it realizes its mistake. This way, the dog won't mistake the owner's lack of attention for playfulness.
