How to correct a kitten's biting and scratching behavior
When a kitten exhibits biting and scratching behavior, you can correct it by using loud rebukes, stopping the practice of teasing the kitten with your hands or feet, adopting another cat, employing the cold treatment, learning to observe the kitten's body language, and helping the kitten expend its energy. Additionally, biting and scratching behavior is common in kittens during their teething phase. It is recommended to prepare a chew toy for the kitten to alleviate the discomfort of teething, which can effectively improve the kitten's biting and scratching behavior and prevent the occurrence of double teeth.
- Loud rebukes
If the kitten bites or scratches while playing, the owner can shout loudly to discipline the kitten and let it know that this behavior is wrong. The owner's attitude should be serious, otherwise, it will only have the opposite effect. When the kitten bites the owner again, stop after the owner calls out, and give the kitten a treat as a reward.
- Stop teasing the kitten with hands or feet
Many owners habitually tease kittens with their hands or feet, but this is a wrong way to do it. In the long run, it can make the cat mistake the owner's fingers as toys and bite or scratch them. Therefore, the owner should not develop the habit of using fingers to tease the cat. Instead, provide toys like catnip sticks or fur balls for the kitten to play with.
- Own more than one cat
If conditions permit, you can also choose to own more than one cat. This way, the cats can keep each other company, and their interest in attacking humans will decrease significantly.
- Cold treatment
When the cat wants to bite or scratch, the owner can also choose the cold treatment to correct its behavior. As soon as the cat bites or scratches, stop the action and move away from it immediately. This will deprive the cat of a sense of accomplishment and reduce its attacking behavior. Of course, if the cat's behavior is relatively gentle, you can also give it praise and appropriate treats as rewards.
- Learn to observe the cat's body language
Before a cat bites or scratches, it usually exhibits some physical movements, such as when the cat growls and its tail wags back and forth. This indicates that the cat is becoming impatient. It's time to stay away from the cat to avoid being bitten or scratched.
- Help the kitten expend its energy
One reason why kittens bite and scratch is that they have too much energy with nowhere to spend it. Therefore, the owner should interact more with the cat to help it expend its energy. When the kitten gets tired from playing, it won't have the energy to bite anymore.
