How to Spay or Neuter a Cat
Male Cat: The scrotum is cut longitudinally, and the testicles are removed along with a portion of the spermatic cord. The surgery is relatively simple and quick. After the procedure, proper care should be taken to prevent infection.
Female Cat: An incision is made in the lower abdomen, and the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and a portion of the uterus are removed. After the operation, proper care must be taken to ensure that the wound does not become infected or damaged before removal of the stitches.
Method Description
Before the procedure, the cat should be evaluated, including a physical examination and blood test (which can be optional). It is recommended to perform a comprehensive laboratory examination for older cats to detect diseases with anesthesia and surgical risks. Other types of preoperative examinations can also be performed based on the primary disease.
The traditional method of sterilization surgery involves finding the location of the reproductive system through a longer abdominal incision. Compared to the healthy non-pregnant uterus, the incision required for removing the diseased or enlarged uterus is longer. In rare cases, the veterinarian may recommend opening on both sides (behind the last rib) for ovariohysterectomy.
Ovariohysterectomy (OVE) refers to the removal of the ovaries, while ovarian-uterine excision (OVH, OHE) refers to the simultaneous removal of the uterus and ovaries, which is usually also called sterilization surgery.
