How to tell how old a cat is in months
You can estimate how old a cat is by observing its teeth, weight, eyes, and behavior. However, these methods are only approximate and to determine the exact age of the cat, it is best to take the cat to a reputable pet hospital for a checkup.
- Teeth
To estimate the age of a kitten, you can observe its teeth. Cats usually begin to grow teeth at around two weeks of age, and by two months, they have sharp baby teeth. At around four months, the teeth start to fall out and be replaced. By six months, the baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth, and by nine months, all the teeth are fully grown. You can determine the age of a cat by observing the growth of its teeth.
- Weight
You can also estimate the age of a cat by looking at its weight. Newborn cats usually weigh between 100g and 120g. Two weeks after birth, their weight usually ranges from 170g to 230g. When the cat is two months old, it usually weighs between 400g and 700g. Three months later, the cat usually weighs between 2kg and 4kg, and as an adult, its weight usually ranges from 5kg to 10kg.
- Eyes
Another way to assess the age of a cat is by looking at its eyes. Cats open their eyes about 14 days after birth, and their eyes are usually a bright blue. As they age, the eyes begin to return to their original color around one month.
- Behavior
Two weeks after birth, cats start to learn to crawl and walk unsteadily. By four weeks, they can walk more steadily. When the cat is two months old, it can run, climb, hunt, and jump. Adults will exhibit hunting behavior.
Please note that these methods are only approximate and for an accurate assessment, it is best to consult a veterinarian.
