How to Tell if a Cat is Deaf

To determine if a cat is deaf, you can observe their daily behaviors. At home, you can speak loudly or create noise near the cat's ears. If the cat shows signs of flying ears or fleeing quickly, it means the cat is not deaf. However, if the cat has no reaction to the noise, it is likely deaf. Additionally, for a white cat with blue eyes, you can easily tell if it's deaf by its unique appearance. Usually, the ear on the same side as the blue eye may be deaf. Of course, if you can't determine for sure, you can take the cat to a pet hospital for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

  1. Judge by the cat's daily behavior

A normal cat's hearing is very sensitive. When they hear any unusual movements around them, they will become alert and turn their ears towards the sound source to identify the location and nature of the sound. Therefore, when the cat is quietly resting, you can speak loudly or create noise near its ears, and then observe its reaction. If the cat has no response, it is basically confirmed that the cat is deaf.

  1. Judge by the cat's appearance

White cats with blue eyes are particularly prone to congenital deafness. Therefore, if a white cat has blue eyes, it is likely deaf. Moreover, in cats with different colored eyes, if one eye is blue, the ear on the same side also has a chance of being deaf. However, if the cat's eyes are yellow or green, the likelihood of deafness is relatively smaller.
