How to wean kittens when mother cat is present
1. Gradual weaning method (5-7 days)
Generally, kittens start weaning at around 40 days old and are fully weaned at 45 days old. During weaning, it's best to adopt a gradual approach to avoid stress reactions in the kittens. For example, the owner can buy a suitable amount of goat milk powder and gradually reduce the number of times the kitten eats breast milk, while increasing the number of times it eats goat milk powder. Eventually, the kitten will be fully weaned.
- Gradual weaning in 5-7 days
Usually, kittens begin weaning at 40 days old and are completely weaned at 45 days old. During weaning, it is important to use a gradual method. From the first day of weaning, you can give the kitten some softened cat food. The amount of cat food gradually increases each day, and the number of times the kitten eats breast milk gradually decreases until day 7, when the kitten transitions to eating only cat food. After weaning, the kitten mainly eats softened milk cake food, which can be replaced with completely dry and hard cat food when the kitten is 2 months old.
- Apply unpleasant smells to the mother cat's nipples
If the kitten is strongly dependent on the mother cat, you can apply an unpleasant smell to the mother cat's nipples or dress her in a weaning suit. Then, offer softened kitten food or milk cake regularly and quantitatively, with small meals throughout the day. This way, the kitten will seek out food besides drinking the mother cat's milk, gradually succeeding in weaning.
- Precautions
When feeding kittens, it is important to follow a small-quantity, multiple-meals approach. Avoid feeding too much, as it can cause indigestion, and don't feed too little, as it can lead to malnutrition and sickness. The exact amount can be determined based on the kitten's condition, with a general guideline being to feed until the kitten's belly is slightly swollen. Kittens around 2 months old should be fed 5-6 times a day, while those over 3 months old should be fed 4 times a day, and kittens over 6 months old should be fed twice a day.
Additionally, for kittens aged 1 month, it's necessary to keep them warm to prevent them from catching a cold. When the kitten is 45 days old, vaccination can be administered. Do not take the kitten outside before the vaccination is complete.
