Ways to Prevent a Dog from Getting Pregnant
There are two main ways to prevent a dog from getting pregnant: neutering or spaying the dog and dressing your dog in a doggy diaper. If the owner does not have any plans to breed the dog, neutering or spaying is highly recommended. It is usually advised to do this before the dog's first heat, with the optimal age being 6-8 months. If the owner does not want to neuter or spay the dog, it is recommended to closely monitor the dog during its heat cycle, avoid letting the dog outside, and dress it in a doggy diaper to prevent contact with male dogs.
- Neutering or Spaying
The most recommended method to prevent a dog from getting pregnant is to neuter or spay the dog. This usually involves removing the entire uterus and both ovaries, rendering the dog infertile. After the neutering or spaying procedure, the dog will not only be unable to get pregnant but will also stop experiencing heat cycles. Additionally, this procedure can reduce the likelihood of the dog developing reproductive system diseases such as pyometra, ovarian cysts, endometritis, testicularitis, and testicular cysts.
- Wearing a Doggy Diaper
If the owner does not want to neuter or spay the dog, it is recommended to minimize the dog's outdoor activities during its physiological period. If there is an urgent need to take the dog outside, the dog can wear a doggy diaper to physically prevent contact with male dogs.
Note: There are various dog contraceptives on the market, but their effectiveness and safety are uncertain. Using contraceptives may cause adverse reactions and may affect the dog's reproductive system. Therefore, the best contraceptive method is to neuter or spay the dog at an appropriate age.
