What is going on when a cat is unusually excited?
Unusual excitement in a cat does not necessarily indicate a specific condition. It may be caused by reasons such as heat, sensing a peculiar smell, self-pleasure, ear mites, infectious hepatitis, or hyperthyroidism. If the excitement is caused by heat, sensing a peculiar smell, or self-pleasure, it is a normal phenomenon and no special treatment is required. However, if accompanied by other uncomfortable symptoms such as itchy ears, palpitations, abdominal distension, etc., it is recommended that the owner take the cat to a regular hospital for treatment to avoid delaying the treatment and affecting the disease control.
- Heat
If a cat is in heat, it can lead to excessive excitement, which is a normal physiological phenomenon. Once the heat period passes, the adverse reactions will return to normal.
- Sensing a peculiar smell
If a cat senses a peculiar smell, such as catnip, it can become overly excited, which is a normal phenomenon and usually requires no special treatment.
- Self-pleasure
If a cat is in a state of self-pleasure and playing with a toy it loves, it can lead to excessive excitement. Once the cat gets tired of playing, its mood will return to normal.
- Ear mites
Usually caused by poor local hygiene, it can cause dirt in the ears and itching sensation. The cat will scratch the affected skin, causing excessive excitement. It requires following the doctor's advice to use external parasiteicides specifically designed for ear mites.
- Infectious hepatitis
Usually caused by viral infection, it can damage liver function and affect the normal operation of the liver. It causes symptoms such as enlarged liver and abdominal distension. When the abdomen becomes uncomfortable, the cat will run to relieve the discomfort, causing excitement. It requires following the doctor's advice to take antiviral medications.
- Hyperthyroidism
Mainly caused by excessive thyroid hormone secretion, it can lead to accelerated metabolism and increased systemic excitability, causing weight loss, palpitations, thick neck, and other symptoms. It also causes unusual excitement and requires taking antithyroid medications under a doctor's guidance.
