Why do cats sleep with their eyes open?

Cats sleeping with their eyes open may be due to a lack of security or being in a light sleep. As long as there are no other abnormalities in cats, it is generally a normal physiological habit, and owners do not need to worry too much. However, if the cat also shows symptoms such as tears, increased secretions from the eyes, etc., it may be due to eye diseases. The cat's eyes feel uncomfortable, so they sleep with their eyes open. In this case, it is necessary to take the cat to the pet hospital as soon as possible for an eye examination to determine the specific cause and then treat it accordingly.

  1. Lack of security

Cats are very needy animals when it comes to security, and this applies even when they are asleep. If a cat is sleeping in a unfamiliar or stressful environment, it will remain alert to quickly respond to any unexpected situations, especially when it is a young cat that has just arrived at its new home. In this case, it is recommended that the owner comfort the cat more, spend more time with it, and help it adapt to the new environment as quickly as possible. Placing familiar objects near the cat can also make it feel secure enough to fall into a deep and rapid sleep.

  1. Light sleep

If a cat's eyes are half-open while sleeping, it may be because the cat is in a light sleep phase, sleeping lightly and possibly exhibiting some tail movement. It can be easily awakened by mild sounds or touches. Moreover, when the weather is cold, cats are more likely to frequently enter shallow sleep phases. Therefore, owners should also pay attention to controlling the indoor temperature, with 20-30 degrees being the ideal range.

  1. Eye diseases

If a cat sleeps with its eyes completely open and accompanied by symptoms such as tears and increased secretions from the eyes, it is likely that the cat has a problem with its eyes, such as trauma, eyelid eversion, conjunctivitis, etc. Due to the discomfort in its eyes, the cat prefers to sleep with its eyes open. If the owner notices any abnormalities in the cat's eyes, it is necessary to take the cat to the pet hospital for examination and treatment.
