Reasons why a male cat urinates on the bed
The main reasons why a male cat urinates on the bed are:
Heat
Dirty litter box
Revenge behavior
Urinary system disorder
Firstly, when a male cat is in heat, he will urinate everywhere in an attempt to attract a female cat through the smell of his urine. Secondly, cats are very clean animals. If the litter box is too dirty, they may choose to urinate on the bed. Additionally, if the owner has recently scolded the cat, the cat may urinate on the bed out of revenge. Lastly, when a cat has a urinary system problem, they cannot control themselves and will urinate everywhere. It's necessary to take the cat to the vet promptly.
- Heat
Usually, male cats reach sexual maturity at 8-10 months old and will display heat behavior. This includes urinating everywhere except for the bed, loud nighttime meowing, decreased appetite, bad temper, and wanting to leave home to find a female cat. To cope with this, if the cat is already adult and physically mature, the owner can arrange for the cat to be neutered. If the owner has no intention to breed, it's recommended to have the cat undergo a spay/neuter surgery promptly.
- Dirty litter box
Cats are very clean and if the owner doesn't clean the litter box in time, the cat may refuse to use it and look for another place to go to the bathroom. The bed is soft and good at absorbing urine, so the cat may urinate on it. Therefore, the owner should regularly clean the litter box. If the owner is at home every day, they should clean the cat's waste after each bowel movement. If the owner needs to go to work, they should still clean the litter box in the morning and evening.
- Revenge behavior
Cats have a strong sense of revenge. If the owner disciplines the cat for being naughty, the cat may urinate on the owner's bed out of revenge. To deal with this, the owner can observe the cat's recent behavior. If it happened after the owner punished the cat, it might be the cat's revenge. The best solution is to keep the bedroom door closed to prevent the cat from entering.
- Urinary system disorder
If the cat urinates on the bed frequently, has difficulty holding urine, or has other urinary problems, it may be a urinary system disorder. This is especially true for spontaneous cystitis, which is common in male cats. In this case, the owner should take the cat to the vet immediately and treat it with antibiotics.
