German Shepherd Puppy Care After Birth

The German Shepherd's pregnancy and childbirth process can be very physically taxing, so it's important to ensure adequate nutrition for the mother dog after birth. Provide a reasonable diet to ensure sufficient milk supply, and control uterine inflammation to promote recovery. If the dog had a caesarean section, care should also be taken for wound healing.

Postpartum Care for German Shepherds

German Shepherds are particularly vulnerable after giving birth, so owners should initially prepare some clean water for them and take care of them. You can cook some chicken soup to replenish their strength and make some fish soup to provide necessary nutrients for milk production. Be aware of temperature changes to prevent the dog from catching a cold or suffering from heat stroke. Take care of the mother dog's emotions and give her more love to prevent postpartum depression.

What to Feed German Shepherds After Birth

After giving birth, dogs may experience low blood calcium, low blood sugar, and anemia. It is generally recommended to feed the mother dog goat's milk and switch her dog food to milk cake or specialized pregnancy dog food during lactation. Oral calcium and blood-building supplements may also be given. Particularly for multiparous dogs or small-breed dogs, additional nutrition should be provided to prevent postpartum diseases.

How to Prevent Dog Seizures After Birth

  1. Calcium supplementation: Just like humans, dogs also need to recuperate after childbirth. Adjust the mother dog's diet to increase calcium, vitamin D, and protein content, ensuring a sufficient milk supply to meet the puppies' nutritional needs. This can include oral calcium supplements and adding calcium powder to their food.
  2. Sun exposure: Allow the mother dog to spend one hour outside in the morning and afternoon, and expose her to sunlight.
  3. Early supplementation: After treatment, continue breastfeeding until the puppies are one month old. Feed the puppies early replacement food to wean them off breast milk, and feed them milk cake after weaning.
