How to tell the difference between male and female kittens right after birth
Male and female kittens can be distinguished by looking at their physical characteristics such as genitalia shape, weight, eyes, and the distance between the genitalia and the anus. Since kittens are small right after birth, it may be difficult for those without experience to tell the difference between male and female kittens. It is necessary to refer to the following methods to identify the gender. If the gender cannot be determined, it can be further judged when the kitten's body gradually matures.
Genitalia shape: There are certain differences in the shape of the reproductive organs between male and female cats. The female reproductive organs are linear or drop-shaped, while the male reproductive organs are generally round. To determine whether a kitten is a male or a female, observe the external genitalia. If the genitalia resemble a seam, it is likely a female; if the shape is more like a dot, it is usually a male.
Weight: Male kittens are generally larger in size and have a higher weight than female kittens. Female kittens are smaller in comparison to male kittens and have a lower weight at birth.
Eyes: One way to distinguish between male and female kittens is by observing their eyes. Male kittens generally have sharper eyes and are not gentle. Female kittens have warmer, softer eyes and rarely display sharp expressions.
Distance between genitalia and anus: The distance between the female genitalia and the anus is relatively close, about the width of a finger. There will be a long vertical vaginal opening 1 cm below the anus. The distance between the male genitalia and the anus is farther, about two to three fingers wide. The underside of the anus contains the testicles and penis. As the kitten's body grows, the testicles will significantly enlarge between two and five months, and the size of the penis will also change.
If you are still unable to determine the gender of the kitten after using the above methods, it is recommended to take the kitten to a reputable pet hospital and let a professional veterinarian identify the gender.
